Tokyo neighbourhoods for first-timers

How to choose Tokyo neighbourhoods without treating the city as one endless checklist.

Tokyo is a constellation, not a single centre

First-timers burn out when they treat Tokyo like a museum checklist. Plan by neighbourhood clusters: Shinjuku/Shibuya for energy, Asakusa for older streets and temples, and a quieter residential evening to reset.

Choose a base with purpose

Your hotel or stay area should reduce transit friction for the days you care about most. If nightlife and neon matter, stay west. If temples and slower mornings matter, stay closer to the east or north-east corridor.

One slow morning every day

Tokyo’s density is the point — and the risk. Keep at least one unscheduled morning so the city can surprise you. Magazine inspiration should create space, not fill every hour.
